I think the baby should be #1. Personally, I never found the others to be that unsettling. In fact, the baby is the primary reason I would not watch Eraserhead. I also do not want to watch "the Alphabet", I heard that scared the heck out of those who saw it.

It's true that you can't have time travel movies without paradoxes. That would be like trying to make a romantic comedy without a gay friend character.

This list was basically just an excuse to blab about BTTF and the things I like to ponder and discuss. I honestly wouldn't change a thing about these movies, even if things don't make perfect sense upon reflection.

Also, I like to imagine that at the end of the trilogy when Doc and his family ride away in their flying train he's going to go hang with Dr. Who, and time permitting, ... Bill and Ted.

If you let things like paradoxes interfere with your enjoyment of time travel fiction, you'd never enjoy any time travel fiction. I've found that it's usually best to just let it roll past you and go with the flow without worrying too much about the technical glitchy things. But it is fun to ponder sometimes, when you feel like twisting your brain into Gordian knots.

Overrated = Superman, he's so dumb and dull and his past has been revamped so many times it just makes you puke. If Kryptonians can fly and breathe in outerspace why didn't his parents just fly to earth or to another planet when Krypton exploded ?

Slightly Overrated = the lanterns

Just right = Rogue, Wonderwoman, Batman.

There's definitely an almost immature quality to Red State, especially near the end, that I can see would turn a lot of people off. I think the genre shift pays off on a second viewing where you're more apt to go along with it and be less focused on thinking wtf?

I'm a bit disappointed Drive didn't get any major nominations. I kind of expected it to land one of the best picture slots ... I mean, they can have up to ten now for crying out loud. I would have liked to see Ryan Gosling get a nomination for best actor. I'm most surprised that it didn't get something for cinematography.

What's funny about Red State is that even though I liked the film and appreciated a lot of what was attempted, the second act bothered my only because I felt like the movie was attempting so much yet just couldn't quite nail it. But when you compared the "switcheroo" to From Dusk Til Dawn it got my wheels turning. I might re-watch the film soon and be more open minded about it's genre blending efforts. Maybe it will hit me differently.

On a different note, I'm glad to see Super 8 getting some love.

Also, are you bummed Drive didn't snag any major Oscar noms? What would you have liked to see it recognized for.

of these, i've only seen Super 8 and I have pretty much the same feelings about it. the kids were very likeable but maybe still not as much as i was hoping they'd be.
as you said, the second half isn't as good. this is really because the alien, while the catalyst for all the stuff that happens in the film, isn't nearly as interesting as the situation it creates.
regardless if what critics or anyone else thought of it, i've wanted to see Red State. since it's gotten your stamp of approval, my resolve strengthened.
the previews for Mission Impossible made it look really good but i was aware that that might not mean anything. i'll have to see it at some point. i think i still made the right choice in seeing Sherlock Holmes though.
i honestly don't know if it would be worthwhile for me to do a Favourite of 2011 list - i really only saw a handful of movies and none were that great.

When I researched the Loksa traditions, it actually mentioned the Ukraine, but I could find the most information on Slovakia's traditions, so that's what I went with.
